flow "Number Systems and Coherence"

# ---------- CONCEPT ----------
# Numbers are coherent boundaries — stable identifiers of relation.
# Each system (Natural, Integer, Rational, Real, Complex) extends the domain of coherence.
# Arithmetic operations preserve coherence through defined transformation rules.

# ---------- STATES ----------
state Domain:
ℕ: "Natural numbers — discrete count of stable identities."
ℤ: "Integers — inclusion of reflection (positive ↔ negative)."
ℚ: "Rationals — coherence through proportion."
ℝ: "Reals — continuous boundary, limit closure of ratio space."
ℂ: "Complex — dual boundary (magnitude, phase) in coherent rotation."

# ---------- PARAMETERS ----------
params:
base: "Underlying coherence law — stability of identity under operation."
closure: true # Each number system must be closed under its operations.
symmetry: true # Opposites or inverses exist to preserve equilibrium.
continuity: variable # Extends from discrete to continuous domains.

# ---------- INVARIANTS ----------
invariants:
  - "Identity element exists: a + 0 = a, a × 1 = a."
  - "Inverse elements restore coherence: a + (−a) = 0, a × a⁻¹ = 1 (where defined)."
  - "Operations are associative and distributive — coherence is preserved across grouping."
  - "Closure: any operation within the system produces a member of the same system."
  - "Each system extends coherence, not replaces it — nesting relation: ℕ ⊂ ℤ ⊂ ℚ ⊂ ℝ ⊂ ℂ."

# ---------- TRANSFORMS ----------
transforms:
  Extend(domain_from, domain_to):
rule: "Introduce new boundary condition to restore coherence under broader operation."
    examples:
      - "ℕ → ℤ: enable subtraction by introducing inverse (−a)."
      - "ℤ → ℚ: enable division by introducing ratio (a/b)."
      - "ℚ → ℝ: include limits of infinite series — completeness."
      - "ℝ → ℂ: introduce orthogonal dimension i (√−1) — rotational coherence."

# ---------- MONITORS ----------
monitors:
  ConsistencyCheck:
    measure: "∀ a,b ∈ Domain, operation(a,b) ∈ Domain"
output: "True if system remains closed — coherence preserved."
  CoherenceExpansion:
track: "Transition between domains increases expressive continuity."
indicator: "If closure fails, extend boundary by new dimension or inverse rule."

# ---------- EQUATIONS ----------
equations:
  - "ℕ: a + b = c, a,b,c ∈ ℕ"
  - "ℤ: a + (−b) = c, allows negative balance"
  - "ℚ: a/b, b ≠ 0, coherence through proportion"
  - "ℝ: limₙ→∞ rₙ = r, closure under limit — continuity established"
  - "ℂ: z = a + bi, |z| = √(a² + b²), phase θ = tan⁻¹(b/a)"

# ---------- NOTES ----------
notes:
  - "Each expansion of the number system resolves a previous incoherence."
  - "The imaginary unit i is not unreal; it is a boundary rotation that completes the field."
  - "Mathematical evolution mirrors coherence evolution — every new number set stabilises a prior inconsistency."
Explanatory Notes

Numbers are not arbitrary symbols; they are records of stable relation.
Each number system arose to restore coherence when the previous one reached its limit — when an operation could no longer be expressed without breaking the field.

  • The Natural numbers (ℕ) express discrete stability — counting identity itself.
They mark the first boundary: how many coherent units exist within a field.
  • The Integers (ℤ) introduce reflection.
Negative numbers balance the field, allowing subtraction without rupture.
They express the principle that every quantity has a mirror capable of restoring equilibrium.
  • The Rationals (ℚ) bring proportion — coherence through relation rather than count.
Division becomes possible, and balance extends across ratios.
  • The Reals (ℝ) close the gaps between ratios.
Limits and continuity resolve the incoherence left by infinite series and irrational boundaries.
The real line is therefore the first continuous coherence field.
  • The Complex numbers (ℂ) complete the pattern.
By introducing the imaginary unit ii, coherence gains rotational symmetry —
the capacity to encode both magnitude and phase within a single identity.
What appears “imaginary” is simply orthogonal coherence, invisible to the linear eye but essential to the whole.

Across these domains, the evolution of number mirrors the evolution of understanding:
each stage expands the system’s ability to remain consistent under transformation.
Closure, symmetry, and continuity are not just mathematical rules — they are laws of coherence that allow mathematics itself to exist as a unified structure.

In Flow Algebra, the number systems form the base lattice of all higher flows.
Every subsequent operation — algebraic, geometric, or physical — depends on the same recursive principle:
that a coherent system can always extend its boundaries without losing itself.
