01. PURPOSE
Represent tectonic plates as spatially bounded, mechanically coherent lithospheric entities with observable motions, interactions, boundaries, and geological consequences.

02. DOMAIN
Earth science; plate tectonics; structural geology; geodynamics; geophysics; geological entity graphs.

03. ROOT ENTITY
ENTITY TectonicPlate <: LithosphericEntity
DEFINITION: A coherent portion of planetary lithosphere that moves relative to other portions over geological time, approximately as a rigid spherical cap at first order.
NOTE: Real plates deform internally, especially near boundaries.

SUPPORTED_BY(assertion, observation)

07. RELATIONSHIP CONSTRAINTS
BOUNDARY_BETWEEN(b,a,b) requires a != b.
ADJACENT_TO is symmetric for the same geological time slice.
SUBDUCTS_BENEATH is directed and region-specific, not symmetric.
Boundary type may vary along the same pair of plate margins.
Plate identity and geometry are time-dependent, not timeless constants.

08. PLATE CLASSIFICATION
Major and minor plate categories are conventional, scale-dependent groupings.
Oceanic and continental describe lithospheric regions, not mutually exclusive plate types: one plate may contain both.
Microplates and diffuse deformation zones require explicit uncertainty and boundary treatment.

09. KINEMATIC MODEL
For a plate approximated as rigid on a sphere:
v(r) = omega x r
where omega is angular velocity [rad/s], r is position vector [m], and v is tangential velocity [m/s].
Relative angular velocity:
omega_AB = omega_A - omega_B
Relative velocity at r:
v_AB(r) = omega_AB x r
All angular velocities must be expressed in a common reference frame.

10. BOUNDARY MOTION
Let n be a boundary-normal unit vector in the tangent plane, and t a boundary-tangent unit vector.
Opening rate = v_AB dot n, with normal orientation declared.
Strike-slip rate = v_AB dot t, with tangent orientation declared.
Positive/negative signs have meaning only under stated conventions.

11. DIVERGENT BOUNDARY
RULE: Relative motion with positive opening normal component supports divergence classification.
ASSOCIATIONS: Lithospheric extension, rifting, ridge formation, seafloor spreading.
QUALIFICATION: Local deformation and oblique motion may coexist.

12. CONVERGENT BOUNDARY
RULE: Relative motion with closing normal component supports convergence classification.
ASSOCIATIONS: Subduction, collision, crustal shortening, mountain building.
QUALIFICATION: Convergence does not imply subduction in every setting.

13. TRANSFORM BOUNDARY
RULE: Dominantly boundary-parallel relative motion supports transform classification.
ASSOCIATIONS: Strike-slip faulting, earthquakes, offset geological features.
QUALIFICATION: Real transforms may include transpression or transtension.

14. SUBDUCTION PROCESS
PRECONDITIONS: Convergent geometry and suitable lithospheric configuration.
FLOW: Oceanic lithosphere approaches trench -> bends and descends -> slab interacts with mantle -> associated deformation, seismicity and potentially arc volcanism.
Do not infer volcanism at every subduction segment.

15. PLATE DRIVING FORCES
Processes include slab pull, gravitational potential energy gradients, basal tractions, ridge-related gravitational sliding and mantle-flow coupling.
No single force is universally dominant for all plates.

16. CONSERVATION AND CONTINUITY
Lithosphere may be created at spreading centres and recycled at subduction zones.
Mass conservation applies to the total physical system, not to fixed plate area or individual plate identity.
Geological material can change plate membership over time.

17. SEISMIC RELATIONSHIPS
Plate boundary deformation often produces earthquakes.
Intraplate earthquakes also occur.
Earthquake presence alone does not uniquely establish a plate boundary.

18. VOLCANIC RELATIONSHIPS
Volcanism occurs at many divergent and subduction settings.
Intraplate volcanism may occur at hotspots and other settings.
Volcanism alone does not prove a particular boundary class.

19. GEODETIC OBSERVATIONS
GNSS station displacement, InSAR, marine geodesy and geological markers constrain motion.
OBSERVATION has epoch, coordinate frame, measurement uncertainty and provenance.
Observed surface displacement may contain elastic strain and transient signals beyond rigid-plate motion.

20. GEOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
Magnetic anomalies, ocean-floor ages, fault offsets, seismicity and geological correlations constrain plate history.
Reconstruction is model-dependent and may be non-unique.

21. TEMPORAL MODEL
PLATE_STATE(plate, t) = {geometry, omega, boundary_set, material_regions, confidence}.
UPDATE_MODEL: New observations may alter geometry, velocity, boundaries and identity mapping.
Never project modern plate boundaries unchanged into deep geological time.

22. SPATIAL MODEL
Use geodetic coordinates and an explicit datum/reference frame.
Represent boundaries as georeferenced curves with uncertainty buffers where appropriate.
Handle antimeridian crossings, spherical topology and topology changes.

23. MATHEMATICAL EXAMPLE — RIGID ROTATION
Given angular speed |omega| = 1.0e-8 rad/year and distance from Euler axis r_perp = 4.0e6 m:
|v| = |omega| * r_perp = 0.04 m/year = 40 mm/year.
Assumptions: rigid plate, fixed Euler pole, constant rate over example interval.

24. MATHEMATICAL EXAMPLE — RELATIVE MOTION
Given v_A = (30, 0) mm/year and v_B = (10, 0) mm/year in one shared tangent frame:
v_AB = v_A - v_B = (20, 0) mm/year.
Classification requires the boundary orientation; the velocity vector alone is insufficient.

25. INFERENCE RULES
IF BOUNDARY_BETWEEN(b,a,c) AND relative_normal_motion(b) > tolerance THEN CANDIDATE_TYPE(b, divergent).
IF BOUNDARY_BETWEEN(b,a,c) AND relative_normal_motion(b) < -tolerance THEN CANDIDATE_TYPE(b, convergent).
IF abs(relative_tangential_motion) >> abs(relative_normal_motion) THEN CANDIDATE_TYPE(b, transform_dominated).
IF observed_velocity_departs_from_rigid_model THEN FLAG(local_deformation_or_model_error).
All inferred classifications retain evidence and uncertainty.

26. PROHIBITED INFERENCES
Do not infer plate motion from a single earthquake.
Do not equate lithosphere with crust alone.
Do not assume every convergent boundary is a subduction zone.
Do not assume all plate boundaries are narrow, fixed lines.
Do not conflate geographic proximity with tectonic membership.

27. SEMANTIC_EQUIVALENCE
"lithospheric plate" ~= "tectonic plate" when used in plate tectonics context.
"continental plate" is a contextual shorthand and must not imply exclusively continental lithosphere.
"plate boundary" != "fault"; a boundary may contain multiple faults and deformation structures.
"plate velocity" != "surface GNSS velocity" without correction and modelling.

28. CONFIDENCE
CONFIDENCE(entity_or_claim) depends on measurement quality, model fit, temporal applicability, spatial resolution and independent corroboration.
Do not assign numeric certainty without calibrated evidence.
Represent unknown, contested and inferred properties explicitly.

29. VALIDATION RULES
VALIDATE: Units consistent and convertible.
VALIDATE: Velocity vectors use common reference frame and epoch.
VALIDATE: Boundary topology and plate membership consistent for the chosen time.
VALIDATE: Every inferred classification has supporting observations or model assumptions.
VALIDATE: Uncertainty and provenance attached to observations.
VALIDATE: No contradictory directed subduction assertion for the same segment and time without conflict annotation.

30. FLOW_HASH
FLOW_HASH.algorithm = SHA-256
FLOW_HASH.input = canonical UTF-8 normalisation of content excluding the hash-value field.
FLOW_HASH.value = COMPUTE_AT_INGESTION
FLOW_HASH is a specification, not a fabricated precomputed digest.

31. UPDATE_MODEL
Trigger on new GNSS/InSAR constraints, revised geological maps, boundary reinterpretations, geochronology or new plate reconstructions.
Preserve version history, prior geometry, evidence, review status and change provenance.

32. AI_CONSUMPTION
INPUT: entity, observation, location, time, reference_frame, confidence.
PROCESS: resolve identity -> normalise coordinates and units -> classify relation -> apply constrained inference -> validate -> report evidence and uncertainty.
OUTPUT: typed entity graph, explicit assumptions, derived claims, citations/provenance, confidence and unresolved conflicts.
