04. IDENTITY AND QUANTUM NUMBERS
W+ electric charge = +1 e
W- electric charge = -1 e
Spin = 1 (vector boson)
Colour charge = singlet
Rest mass approximately 80.4 GeV/c^2; numerical values are rounded and measurement-dependent.
Both bosons are unstable; characteristic lifetime is approximately 3 x 10^-25 s.
The W+ and W- are each other's antiparticles.

05. PHYSICAL DISTINCTIONS
The W boson is an elementary quantum excitation of the charged weak gauge fields.
It is not a composite hadron and does not carry QCD colour charge.
A virtual W in a Feynman diagram is not required to satisfy the on-shell mass relation.
The W boson is not the same entity as the electrically neutral Z boson.

06. ELECTROWEAK STRUCTURE
Gauge symmetry before spontaneous breaking: SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y.
Charged fields: W^+ = (W^1 - i W^2)/sqrt(2); W^- = (W^1 + i W^2)/sqrt(2).
Tree-level relation: m_W = g v / 2, where g is the SU(2)_L gauge coupling and v is the Higgs vacuum expectation value.
This is a tree-level expression; precision predictions include radiative corrections.
The weak charged current couples to left-chiral fermion fields and right-chiral antifermion fields.

07. CHARGED-CURRENT INTERACTIONS
W- can mediate transitions such as d -> u + W-* followed by W-* -> e- + anti-nu_e, where * denotes an off-shell boson.
A representative beta-minus decay is n -> p + e- + anti-nu_e at hadron level.
W+ can decay to e+ + nu_e.
Leptonic W channels also include muon and tau flavours when kinematically allowed.
Hadronic W channels involve allowed quark-antiquark combinations weighted by CKM matrix elements.

08. CONSERVATION CONSTRAINTS
At every physical vertex, conserve electric charge.
Conserve total energy and momentum for complete physical processes.
Conserve angular momentum, accounting for orbital and spin contributions.
Respect applicable lepton and baryon number selection rules in the Standard Model.
Quark flavour changes are governed by the charged-current coupling and CKM structure.
Do not infer that every formally written decay is kinematically possible.

09. DECAY MODEL
W+ -> l+ + nu_l for l in {e, mu, tau}.
W- -> l- + anti-nu_l for l in {e, mu, tau}.
W+ -> u_i + anti-d_j where kinematics and CKM coupling permit.
W- -> anti-u_i + d_j where kinematics and CKM coupling permit.
Partial width Gamma_i and total width Gamma_total obey Gamma_total = sum_i Gamma_i.
Branching ratio BR_i = Gamma_i / Gamma_total.
Lifetime tau = hbar / Gamma_total.

CHECK: type membership and quantum numbers.
CHECK: charge and other conservation constraints.
CHECK: kinematic threshold and allowed couplings.
DERIVE: valid candidate transition or reject with reason.
ATTACH: confidence, theoretical assumptions, and evidence provenance.

11. INFERENCE RULES
RULE R1: IS_A(x, ChargedWeakGaugeBoson) -> IS_A(x, VectorBoson).
RULE R2: IS_A(x, ChargedWeakGaugeBoson) -> MEDIATES(x, WeakInteraction).
RULE R3: ANTIPARTICLE_OF(WPlus, WMinus) -> CHARGE(WPlus) = -CHARGE(WMinus).
RULE R4: VALID_DECAY(parent, products) -> SUM_CHARGE(products) = CHARGE(parent).
RULE R5: VALID_DECAY(parent, products) -> REST_MASS(parent) >= SUM_REST_MASS(products) for an isolated on-shell parent decay.
RULE R6: OBSERVED_SIGNATURE(signature) does not alone imply UNIQUE_PARENT(WBoson); competing backgrounds must be evaluated.
RULE R7: ALLOWED_BY_CHARGE(x) does not imply ALLOWED_BY_ALL_CONSTRAINTS(x).

12. WORKED VALIDATION A
Candidate: W- -> e- + anti-nu_e.
Initial charge: -1 e.
Final charge: -1 e + 0 = -1 e.
Lepton family accounting: electron lepton number +1 plus antineutrino -1 = 0.
Result: allowed Standard Model leptonic decay.

13. WORKED VALIDATION B
Candidate: W+ -> e- + nu_e.
Initial charge: +1 e.
Final charge: -1 e + 0 = -1 e.
Result: reject because electric charge is not conserved.

14. WORKED VALIDATION C
Candidate: W+ -> u + anti-d.
Initial charge: +1 e.
Final charge: +2/3 e + +1/3 e = +1 e.
Result: charge-consistent and an allowed quark-level decay channel; hadronisation determines observed jets.

15. EXPERIMENTAL SIGNATURES
Leptonic W production may yield a charged lepton plus missing transverse momentum from a neutrino.
Hadronic W decay may yield jets whose invariant mass is compatible with the W mass.
Event reconstruction requires detector calibration, uncertainty models, and background estimation.
An observed signature is evidence, not a logically sufficient proof of unique W production.

16. SEMANTIC EQUIVALENCE
"W boson" may denote either W+ or W- or the charged-boson family; resolve by context.
"charged weak boson" SEMANTIC_EQUIVALENCE "W± boson" at the family level.
"W+" NOT_SEMANTIC_EQUIVALENCE "W-" at the individual particle-type level.
"weak gauge boson" is broader than "W boson" because it can include Z0.
