06. IDENTITY AND EQUIVALENCE
Same designation is not sufficient for identity unless authority, epoch and orbital association agree.
Canonical identity should use a recognised minor-body designation and source authority.
Alias equality: SAME_ENTITY(a,b) only when identifier resolution and orbital evidence are consistent.
Do not merge fragmented comet nuclei without explicit parent-fragment relation.

07. NUCLEUS MODEL
Nucleus consists of refractory solids and volatile-bearing components in a porous, heterogeneous structure.
Attributes: effective_radius_m, shape_model, rotation_period_s, bulk_density_kg_m3, albedo, volatile_inventory.
Measurements may be unknown or model-dependent; do not infer exact composition from class membership.

08. ACTIVITY MODEL
Solar heating can drive volatile sublimation and gas/dust release.
Activity varies with heliocentric distance, thermal history, illumination and composition.
A coma is a transient envelope; a comet can lack a visible coma when inactive.
Dust and plasma tails are distinct physical structures with different controlling forces.

09. DUST TAIL
Dust dynamics respond to solar gravity, radiation pressure, grain properties and ejection velocity.
Dust-tail direction is not necessarily exactly antisolar and may curve along the orbit.

10. ION TAIL
Ionised gas couples to solar-wind plasma and the interplanetary magnetic field.
Ion tails commonly extend approximately antisolar but can show disconnections and structure.

11. ORBITAL PARAMETERS
Orbit {epoch, reference_frame, semimajor_axis_a, eccentricity_e, inclination_i,
 longitude_ascending_node_Omega, argument_perihelion_omega, perihelion_epoch_T,
 perihelion_distance_q, covariance, solution_source}
For Keplerian osculating elements: q = a(1-e) where a is signed in hyperbolic solutions.
Osculating elements are epoch-dependent; nongravitational outgassing can modify motion.

12. KEPLERIAN DYNAMICS
Specific orbital energy: epsilon = v^2/2 - mu/r.
For a non-parabolic two-body orbit: epsilon = -mu/(2a).
Specific angular momentum: h = r x v.
Orbital period for bound two-body ellipse: P = 2*pi*sqrt(a^3/mu).
These are approximations; planetary perturbations and outgassing require more complete models.

13. ORBITAL CLASSES
Short-period comet: commonly P < 200 years, when a reliable bound period exists.
Long-period comet: commonly P >= 200 years for bound orbits.
Hyperbolic osculating orbit does not alone prove interstellar origin; assess original barycentric orbit and uncertainties.
Jupiter-family and Halley-type are dynamical subcategories with classification conventions.

14. ORIGIN HYPOTHESES
Scattered disc is a major reservoir associated with Jupiter-family comets.
Oort cloud is a hypothesised distant reservoir associated with many long-period comets.
Origin assignment is probabilistic and must be linked to dynamical evidence.

15. THERMAL ENERGY BALANCE
Simplified illuminated surface balance:
(1-A)*S_sun*cos(theta)/r_AU^2 = epsilon_IR*sigma*T^4 + L*Z(T) + Q_conduction.
Variables: A Bond albedo; S_sun solar constant at 1 AU; theta incidence angle;
 epsilon_IR emissivity; sigma Stefan-Boltzmann constant; L latent heat;
 Z mass flux; Q_conduction conductive heat flux.
Use consistent units and model geometry; this is not a universal closed-form temperature law.

16. SUBLIMATION AND MASS LOSS
Total mass-loss rate (kg/s) may be modelled as sum of volatile and dust contributions.
Mdot_total = Mdot_gas + Mdot_dust.
For an effective active area A_active: Mdot_gas = A_active * Z_mass(T).
Active area and dust-to-gas ratio are inferred with uncertainty.

17. NONGRAVITATIONAL ACCELERATION
Outgassing momentum transfer can produce small nongravitational accelerations.
Approximate vector relation: a_ng = F_outgas / M_nucleus.
Empirical orbital models may use radial, transverse and normal terms with heliocentric-distance dependence.
Do not equate an empirical fit with a unique physical mechanism.

18. PHOTOMETRY
Apparent brightness depends on distance, phase, dust/gas activity, observing band and aperture.
An empirical magnitude relation sometimes used: m = H + 5*log10(Delta) + 2.5*n*log10(r),
where r and Delta are in AU, H and n are fitted parameters.
This relation is observational and not universal.

19. SPECTROSCOPY
Spectral observations can identify molecular species and dust signatures.
Detected species do not necessarily reveal bulk nucleus abundance without excitation and transport modelling.

20. MORPHOLOGY AND ROTATION
Jet patterns, coma asymmetry and light curves can constrain rotation and active regions.
Inference must account for viewing geometry and non-unique inverse solutions.

21. FRAGMENTATION
FRAGMENT_OF(fragment,parent) is distinct from SAME_ENTITY(fragment,parent).
Fragmentation may result from thermal, rotational, tidal or other stresses.
Record event epoch, evidence, confidence and fragment-specific orbits.

22. OBSERVATION MODEL
Observation {id, time_UTC, observer, instrument, bandpass, astrometric_frame,
 measured_quantity, value, unit, uncertainty, calibration, source_uri}
Always preserve raw observations separately from derived model outputs.

23. UNITS AND DIMENSIONS
Distance: m, km, AU; time: s, day, year; mass: kg; density: kg/m^3;
 velocity: m/s; acceleration: m/s^2; energy flux: W/m^2.
Angles in rad or degrees with explicit units; epoch and reference frame mandatory for orbit comparisons.

24. INFERENCE RULES
RULE R01: Comet(c) AND HAS_NUCLEUS(c,n) -> PhysicalBody(n).
RULE R02: EXHIBITS_COMA(c,k) -> ActivityEvidence(c), not necessarily CurrentlyActive(c).
RULE R03: EXHIBITS_TAIL(c,t) AND IonTail(t) -> PlasmaInteractionEvidence(c).
RULE R04: e<1 AND a>0 AND valid_two_body_model -> BoundKeplerianOrbit.
RULE R05: reliable_period(P) AND P<200_years -> ShortPeriodClass.
RULE R06: fragmentation_evidence(f,p) -> FRAGMENT_OF(f,p), not SAME_ENTITY(f,p).
RULE R07: observed_hyperbolic_eccentricity -> HyperbolicOsculatingCandidate, not ConfirmedInterstellar.
RULE R08: derived_property(x) -> requires(ModelReference, Inputs, Uncertainty).

25. VALIDATION CONSTRAINTS
V01: confidence in [0,1].
V02: nonnegative physical mass and radius estimates.
V03: e >= 0 for standard Keplerian conic eccentricity.
V04: orbital reference frame and epoch must be specified.
V05: each measured value requires unit, uncertainty or explicit uncertainty_unavailable.
V06: no inference of a tail merely from a comet classification.
V07: hypothesis labels cannot be silently promoted to observation facts.
V08: conservation and dimensional consistency checks required for equations.

26. WORKED EXAMPLE — ORBIT
Given a=3 AU and e=0.5 for a bound heliocentric Keplerian orbit:
q = a(1-e) = 1.5 AU.
P approximately sqrt(a^3) years = sqrt(27) = 5.20 years,
using solar mass and standard AU-year approximation.
Classify as short-period under the 200-year convention.
This is an illustrative orbit, not an observed named comet.

27. WORKED EXAMPLE — COMA
Observation: extended diffuse emission around nucleus at a stated epoch.
Inference: coma evidence; possible ongoing or recently sustained activity.
Do not infer exact gas-production rate without calibrated observations and a physical model.

28. SEMANTIC_EQUIVALENCE
cometary_nucleus ~ nucleus_of_comet [context: comet science]
comet_tail != ion_tail [tail is broader class]
comet != asteroid [categories may overlap in observed activity and dynamics]
perihelion_distance == q [when orbital-element conventions match]
comet_activity != comet_visibility [distinct concepts]

29. CONFIDENCE
Direct calibrated observation: source- and uncertainty-dependent.
Derived orbit: confidence depends on observational arc, residuals and covariance.
Origin reservoir: hypothesis-level unless supported by robust dynamical analysis.
Use numerical confidence only when methodology and calibration are documented.

RESOLVE_CONFLICTS -> EXPORT_GRAPH.

31. FLOW_HASH
Canonicalise ontology content as UTF-8, normalise line endings to LF,
exclude the FLOW_HASH value field itself, then compute SHA-256.
FLOW_HASH_VALUE: NOT_COMPUTED

32. UPDATE_MODEL
Versioning: semantic versioning.
Trigger: revised orbit, new observations, revised classifications, new physical model.
Preserve prior versions, source citations, timestamps and uncertainty changes.
Never overwrite raw evidence with derived interpretations.

33. AI_CONSUMPTION
intended_use: scientific retrieval, typed knowledge graphs, transparent inference.
output_types: EntityGraph, RelationSet, InferenceTrace, ValidationReport.
requirements: preserve provenance; mark assumptions; expose uncertainty;
 distinguish observations, theoretical models and speculative hypotheses.
prohibited_inference: unsupported exact physical parameters or origin claims.

34. SCIENTIFIC LIMITATIONS
Comet structure and behaviour vary widely; simplified equations are context-limited.
Dynamical classes depend on epoch, frame and chosen convention.
A visually inactive comet can remain compositionally volatile-rich.
The model does not imply all comets originate from a single reservoir.
